(85 Likes) Zack Snyder just announced the Snyder Cut of Justice League. What’s your reaction to that?

oh make it good Does the Snyder cut fall firmly into this territory? Let’s find out. First, we must remember that the DCEU never got off to a very satisfactory start. It was a shaky foundation. Man of Steel has a lot of haters. BvS has many haters. Justice League 2017 has many haters. And it’s all largely because Warner Bros was rushing things, desperate to catch up with Marvel’s success. We’ve all heard reports of the studio interfering with the directors’ original vision and how, on several occasions, this has resulted in an overall inferior theatrical release – the biggest examples being Suicide Squad and 2017’s Justice League. Fans were furious, and this rightly so. They didn’t think they would get the movie versions of their favorite characters they deserved. The Snyder cut is still a product of its time. She has the daunting task of continuing the legacy of something that began on questionable foundations. Keeping this fact in mind is very important to get a fair rating of this movie. Also, this movie can’t come up with many surprises in the plot department as the plots of the Snyder cut and the 2017 theatrical cut are overall identical. And in view of these handicaps I think the film is actually quite successful. There’s more runtime – each character gets their time in the sun thanks to almost 4 hours of screen time. There is a very good cyborg arc. He is the heart, the emotional core of the film. Joss Whedon really did this character a great disservice in the 2017 theatrical version. The Realistic Sex Doll Nyder Cut does very, very well with this character, who is seriously portrayed by Ray Fisher. Wonder Woman is badass. Snyder really nails the badassery of this global icon of female power and fame in his films. WW was tough in BvS. She’s badass here. And Gal Gadot is phenomenal in her portrayal of this iconic character. Her body language, her demeanor, the fleeting micro-expressions on her face all make her a very likeable and believable Wonder Woman. Batman gets a redemption arc. This isn’t really much different than the 2017 cut. It was handled properly there. That carries over to the Snyder edit. What is an improvement is the character of Alfred and the banter that Bruce and Alfred exchange. There is humor and sarcasm. At one point, Batman even introduces Alfred to the rest of the league, saying, “This is Alfred. I work for him.” Aquaman is handled a bit better here compared to the 2017 version. Due to the increased running time, we see more of the heroic qualities of compassion and empathy in him. Joss Whedon had reduced him to a rather one-dimensional “bad boy” superhero character. It was okay but felt flat. It’s refreshing to see the original vision Snyder had for him. And that’s a recurring theme in the Snyder edit. The characters get justice. You will be treated with love and care and thoughtfulness. For a fan of the Justice League animated series that used to air on Cartoon Network, this is more what we’d like to see in a live-action version of these characters. Superman is well made. The film starts with him and the opening montage is beautiful. Zac Snyder shines with his unique brand of visual storytelling. The film starts very interesting. Superman doesn’t get much screen time. But his involvement is very crucial to the plot of the film. The director effectively plays this card. Superman mustn’t overshadow anyone. He doesn’t feel superfluous in the film either. I also really liked how Superman’s Snyder cut arc connected really well with Man of Steel and BvS. It felt like a culmination of the story elements set in motion in the previous two films. And that very fact increases the Snyder cut in my eyes. The director’s original vision for Justice League was for Kal-El to complete the character arc that began in Man of Steel. And in that respect it feels really satisfying. Superman grows more into the love and respect of Superman fans by the end of this film – happy, hopeful, determined and all-round positive attitude. If we stop and think about the fact that Justice League was what Snyder originally envisioned as the conclusion of a three-part arc for Superman that started with MoS, went through BvS and was fully realized in JL, then perhaps the creative team made a lot of decisions in the done in the two earlier films are kind of starting to make more sense. His brooding nature in MoS, his self-doubt and general fear he caused in the world with his godlike powers, and his rise to selfless martyrdom in BvS, and finally his return to JL as a much better version of himself – all that’s starting to make more sense. Superman happily tells Lois in the film that he now has a second chance and won’t waste it. I’m with him on this. Flash probably wasn’t handled that well. He was portrayed as weak and ineffective. It was tried as comic relief, but even that didn’t work too well for me. In my eyes, however, he is partially redeemed in the last act. He does something that is visually great to look at and has changed the tide of the film. His moments with his father were handled well. His rescue of Iris was well done. But overall, this movie didn’t do it justice. He didn’t feel like a full grown superhero. However, we have to keep in mind that when Snyder was making this film, a solo Flash film was in the works. Perhaps the solo Flash film would have served to complete his arc from feeble male child to fully grown superhero. But I guess we’ll never know for sure now because DCEU embarked on a new path after the release of Justice League 2017 and its disappointing BO performance. The villain was more badass! Steppenwolf got an upgrade. He even got a little backstory which filled him more. Darkseid appeared. The concept of using Steppenwolf as a sort of herald for a much darker and more menacing villain, Darkseid, was handled really effectively. Steppenwolf mostly gets the generic villain treatment, but we have to understand that unlike Infinity War, where all the superheroes were already introduced earlier, Justice League should introduce us to many new characters that would later get their own movies. A questionable strategy, all born out of DC’s desperation to match and catch up with Marvel’s success. But as part of that strategy, Snyder had to operate and therefore couldn’t afford to let a villain like Thanos eclipse the heroes in order to be more interesting. So keeping a generic villain profile for Steppenwolf works in this film given the context of the overall studio strategy in which it works. However, there are pacing issues in the film. At times the film feels slow. I don’t blame it for that because it was originally supposed to be streamed in 6 chapters. But then it was decided to release everything at once. This film is a visual feast for the eyes! Snyder has a penchant for creating compelling imagery, and this film hits the spot on that front. Action scenes are breathtaking and create a super immersive experience. The powers of lightning are presented in a very cool way. Cyborg’s discovery of his abilities was handled very imaginatively. The exhibition scenes were given a real facelift by the director’s unique approach to visual storytelling. And Snyder uses music and songs to enhance the visual imagery. The combination of audio and visuals worked well for me for the most part. This movie has cliffhangers and future hooks. A future that may never be realized now. And that makes me sad. And this is where I decide if the film had more strengths than weaknesses. If a film makes me want more, then it has done more right than wrong. And right now, I really wish I could see more of how Snyder decided to use Darkseid as the future Justice League villain. There’s also the snag of a dystopian timeline where Superman becomes the antagonist and Batman must team up with villains and heroes alike to face him. It also piqued my interest. All in all I like this film despite the running time and some questionable decisions made by the creative team. The Snyder’s Cut definitely doesn’t feel redundant. Fans deserve this rendition. And whether or not WB gives Snyder a chance
