Wenck could have avoided further fighting and easily crossed over to American lines and surrendered to the Americans. However, he knew what the captured soldiers and civilians could expect from the Soviets… General Wenck thought there was no way he would abandon them without doing his best to help them, even with his very limited resources of equipment and capable men. Paraphrasing General Wenck said to his people: “Comrades, you have to go in again, it’s no longer about Berlin, it’s no longer about the Reich or Hitler.” Their task was to save people from the Russians. Once again, the remnants of the 12th Army, exhausted as they were and with very little ammunition left, violently attacked the Russians encircling Berlin in an attempt to punch a hole and create a life-saving corridor. Wenck called out to the Berliners: “Hurry up, we’re waiting for you!” It was an unencrypted radio message that ensured that all military units and civilians could hear it and get to safety. It also meant the Soviets could hear it too, and so could use all their military might to destroy the corridor created by the 12th Army. Very soon, Soviet forces began to break through the German lines. General Wenck again impassionedly urged his men: “Hold the corridor! Once again the German forces launched a bitter, furious counterattack to keep the line of retreat open. This huge human tide began to push west toward safety. By the time the 12th Army men were forced to retreat, nearly three hundred thousand soldiers and civilians had fled to safety. Every life the 12th Army gave saved dozens of lives, and they did it, not for the Reich, much less Hitler, but for their own people. According to one report, a 12th Army soldier later remarked that he and his comrades felt a “sense of loyalty, responsibility and camaraderie” as they sacrificed their own lives to save their comrades and thousands of civilians.
